I. Overview of the Donaldson WSO MV Oil Mist Collector

The WSO MV, Model-Mountable Model, captures airborne mist such as oil, water-soluble coolants, semi-synthetic and synthetic fluids generated from machining operations. The primary and secondary filters, together with an optional HEPA or 95% DOP filter, provide a cleaner, fresher working environment and also reduce consumable costs for filter elements.

With a clean air flow capacity of 520 cmh (306 cfm) @ 50 Hz and 660 cmh (388 cfm) @ 60 Hz, the WSO MV is an important filtration unit to meet air quality standards set by government, industry, and the plant itself. The high-efficiency filters allow air and coolant to be captured, filtered, and reused. Designed to increase equipment flexibility, the variety of filter media—especially those designed for oil mist filtration—makes it worthy of being the industry standard for oil mist applications.

The primary filter is designed for water-based coolants, oil-based coolants, or applications that generate thermal smoke. Standard options include a waste oil reservoir, an  adjustable floor stand, and a third-stage filter.

The WSO MV oil mist collector can be mounted on top of the machine tool, and suction capacity is provided by the fan motor mounted on the filter housing.

1. Operating Process of the Donaldson WSO MV Oil Mist Collector

During normal operation, contaminated air enters the unit through the dirty air inlet at the bottom of the unit. The air slows down, causing the oil mist particles to agglomerate and the larger droplets to fall out of the airstream. The air then passes through the primary filter, which is designed to capture large droplets and particles.

The main filter is a specially designed pleated filter element that captures, coalesces and drains fine oil mist. As the oil mist combines, the droplets become large enough to drain down the filter channels and flow back to the machine. The oil droplets will drain both on the inside and outside of the cartridge. Liquid collected inside the housing exits through the bottom of the filter and into the hopper and back to the machine tool. Clean, oil-free air exits the filter element and is discharged through the top of the unit.

II. Purpose of Using the Oil Mist Collector

Oil mist in the air consists of tiny liquid droplets generated from metalworking machines and suspended in the air. Metalworking oils include cutting oils, water-soluble coolants, semi-synthetic and synthetic coolants. These fluids perform multiple functions such as lubricating or cooling the part or tool, flushing chips away from the part, and suppressing fumes and dust.

Oil mist is generated in two ways: Mechanical action or thermal action. Mechanical action involves coolant used for light lubrication and typically generates oil mist with particle sizes larger than one micron. The thermal effect occurs when heat vaporizes the coolant, the vapor cools and then condenses back into oil mist. The thermal effect generates oil mist with particle sizes from 0.01 to 1 micron. Other contaminants, such as dust from the part or tool, or fumes from vaporized oil or coolant, are also generated when metalworking fluids are used.

The Donaldson WSO MV oil mist collector is not designed to handle water vapor without oil. A certain amount of oil content is required to allow coalescing into droplets. Extreme cases of very heavy oil and very light, thin oil should be avoided. Very heavy oil, similar in consistency to tar, will not drain, while very light, thin oil, similar in consistency to paint thinner, may evaporate.
