The IEP Technologies PHRD Suppressor prevents explosions involving gases, solvent vapors, and combustible dusts. The suppression unit delivers a very high discharge rate to extinguish the incipient fireball in its early stages, thereby preventing the pressure from rising to dangerous levels.

Overview of PHRD Suppressor Components

A cylindrical alloy-steel bottle is filled with 3 kg, 4 kg, or 16 kg of powdered extinguishing agent and is pre-pressurized to 60 bar (880 psi) with dry nitrogen. Inside the flange is a hinged cover supported by a stay arm and held shut by a retaining pin. Opening is initiated by two non-pyrotechnic, piston-type actuators.

Each suppressor is fully function-tested as part of a rigorous quality procedure. The unit can be supplied with a flanged elbow or a mounting spigot/nozzle. Inside the nozzle is a distributor designed to produce an optimal agent discharge pattern. A silicone rubber blow-off cup is fitted to the distributor to prevent ingress of material from the protected vessel.

When the actuators receive an electrical pulse from the associated controller, the pistons withdraw the pin and the cover swings open. The nitrogen then drives the extinguishing agent at high velocity through the distributor assembly into the protected volume. IEP Technologies engineers are available to perform periodic inspection and maintenance. The recommended interval between checks is every three months or 2,000 plant operating hours.

The suppressor is designed to comply with forthcoming ATEX directives. Zone 1, EEx d IIC T6 approvals are also available.
