• Firefly Flame Detection — Avoid False Alarms

The area around dryers contains multiple interference sources that can affect conventional flame detectors. Firefly therefore designed a solution that is highly resistant to false alarms. The detector used to monitor flames around the dryer, the OAD (Open Area Detector), is a dual-channel UV/IR device.

By combining IR and UV wavelengths, the detector efficiently identifies flames while discriminating against other energy sources such as infrared dryer lamps, sunlight, and even arc welding. Using optical detection, IR-Guard operates quickly, reliably, and covers large areas.

• Firefly Spark Detection System

Firefly’s unique TrueDetect™ technology enables the detection of all kinds of ignition sources, such as hot friction particles, sparks, and flames. All of our detectors are insensitive to ambient light to avoid false alarms.

The spark detection system is typically combined with a water-based suppression zone, built on Firefly’s powerful, high-velocity full-cone spray system. This unique suppression concept is designed to cover the entire cross-section of a duct or chute and to penetrate the material or airflow.

The Firefly True IR Spark Detection & Extinguishing System is certified by Factory Mutual (FM) and VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH (VdS).

• Firefly Quick Suppression System

The Firefly Quick Suppression System is engineered to detect and extinguish flames or incipient fires extremely fast in and around machinery as well as in high-risk areas or volumes. The system has been fire-tested under protocol DFL TM170307-1261 and certified by DNV.

It operates with high-performance flame detectors and efficient water-mist suppression. Firefly’s water-mist system achieves superior extinguishing while using a very small amount of water.

• What is a Quick Suppression System?

A Quick Suppression System is a Fixed Automatic Discharge Fire Suppression System, comprising flame detection, steam inerting, and control, with stringent requirements for rapid response and fast extinguishing performance. It is designed to detect and extinguish fires/flames very early around essential machinery or high-risk areas.

In architecture, quick suppression is similar to a spark detection system—combining detection, extinguishing, and a control cabinet. However, spark detection is designed to detect and eliminate ignition sources to prevent a fire, whereas quick suppression is designed to detect and extinguish an actual fire/flame at a very early stage.

• Purpose of Quick Suppression in the Firefly Fire Detection System

The purpose of Firefly Quick Suppression is to act swiftly enough to avoid or significantly reduce damage and downtime, and to prevent a fire from escalating and spreading to other areas. Conventional methods (e.g., sprinklers) require a large fire with high heat to activate and a very large volume of water to extinguish.
