The IEP Technologies IsoFlap™ passive explosion isolation valve is a critical component in industrial safety systems. It is used to prevent the propagation of a potential explosion or fire within processes that manufacture, convey, or store flammable liquids, gases, powders, or granules.

IEP Technologies’ passive isolation valves provide a cost-effective and dependable means of explosion isolation, helping reduce the risk of explosion propagation to primary production equipment. This isolation approach is both economical and effective: it self-activates and ensures isolation of an explosion propagating toward the inlets of protected equipment such as combustible dust processing equipment, dust collectors, cyclones, and other handling systems.

Available models include the IsoFlap™ and IsoFlap™-M. IsoFlap™ variants are third-party certified as protective systems under EU Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX) and are approved for dust-explosion isolation. The IsoFlap™-M integrates monitoring of dust build-up inside the valve body and of the flap/blade position to meet the requirements of OSHA combustible dust guidance as well as NFPA 654 and NFPA 69.

Both IsoFlap™ and IsoFlap™-M feature durable carbon-steel bodies and high-quality alloy steel flaps/blades. The valves are designed to withstand the listed maximum reduced explosion pressure (Pred) in the specifications below. During normal operation, the flap is held open by process airflow; in the event of an explosion upstream, pressure drives the flap shut and locks it in place, minimizing flame and pressure propagation toward upstream equipment.

An optional IsoFlap-M Interface Module, a PCB-based monitoring system – is available for the IsoFlap-M version. The IsoFlap-M includes integrated sensors and display/controls, providing interlock functions to the plant’s main control panel.

High-speed isolation valves provide solutions for critical explosion-isolation applications. They operate within milliseconds to create a mechanical barrier in the ducting/piping.

IEP Technologies’ IsoDisc™ passive isolation line offers a reliable, cost-effective solution to minimize the risk of explosion propagation toward upstream equipment or to the surrounding area via flame and pressure transmission. These self-activating passive solutions provide inlet isolation for protected enclosures that handle combustible dust—such as plant air intakes or clean-air ducts connected to explosion-protected dust collectors.

For equipment located outdoors or near exterior walls, explosion venting can be a viable protection method. However, to protect upstream equipment, it is essential that the protection strategy includes a means of reducing the upstream transmission of flame and burning material. This can be achieved with active isolation systems (chemical or mechanical) or with passive isolation valves. A passive explosion isolation valve is a self-activating device that provides a mechanical barrier to minimize propagation of flame and burning material to upstream equipment.
